As chair of the Art & Art History Department, Peter Freund has recently completed a major revision of the Art Practice curriculum at Saint Mary's College of California. The new curriculum includes twenty courses ranging from traditional studio and digital art practices to critical and new media art theory.
Outside Saint Mary's, Freund is Director of Curriculum Development and Oversight for the San Quentin Media Project, which is developing a film school inside San Quentin Prison. The Project brings together people from the worlds of education, corrections, public health, and independent film. Conceived ultimately to include twenty-five courses in preproduction, production, postproduction, design and business practices, the aim of the curriculum will be to provide inmates with working skills in media production and pathways to industry, exhibition, and education opportunities on the outside.
As co-founder and former department chair for the Multimedia Arts Program at Berkeley City College, Freund played a principal role in developing the curriculum there, which currently offers five majors: Digital Imaging/Printing, Digital Video Arts, Web Design/Production, Animation, and Writing for Multimedia. BCC students pursue integrated training in fine art, critical studies, and computer software & hardware.
